"Great books have always helped me understand who I am and what I believe," Obama said in the ad. For him, the chosen works offer different ways of reflecting on the human experience.
The list includes "Next Time, Fire" by James Baldwin; "The Song of Solomon" by Toni Morrison; "All the Fair Horses" by Cormac McCarthy; "Gilead" by Marilynne Robinson; "All the King's Men" by Robert Penn Warren; and "The Spy Who Knew Too Much", by John le Carré.
The former president also took advantage of the ad to defend the habit of reading at a time when, according to him, fewer people are able to set aside time to read. "It's important to remember the joy and power that can come from reading," he wrote on social media.
The production marks another partnership between Audible and Higher Ground. The companies have already produced "Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast", presented by the former first lady, in addition to programs led by journalist Michele Norris and writer Malcolm Gladwell.
