According to Colombian authorities, the death toll has now exceeded 224 from the strong earthquake that hit the heart of Colombia's coffee growing region, on the west side of the country, prompting the Colombian government to declare a state of national emergency.
The earthquake reduced multi-story buildings to rubble in cities such as Cali, where at least 85 deaths had been confirmed as of this morning. The disaster has been compared to an earthquake that devastated the same region in 1999, killing more than 1,000 people, as well as to the catastrophe that, in June of this year, killed more than 6,300 people in the neighboring country, Venezuela.
