How the Atlas calculates hidden homicides The Atlas uses data from the Ministry of Health's Mortality Information System (SIM). In official records, homicides include deaths caused by aggression, legal intervention and war operations. Some violent deaths, however, are recorded in the system as violent deaths due to an undetermined cause. This occurs when it is not possible to officially identify the cause of death. To estimate how many of these deaths may have been homicides, researchers use a methodology based on machine learning. The model considers historical patterns and characteristics of victims and incidents, such as age, sex, location and circumstances of death. According to the Atlas, the difference between the estimated homicide rate and the officially registered rate reached 3.3 points per 100,000 inhabitants in 2024. The index was above the average of 1.8 points recorded between 2014 and 2017 and the average of 2.8 points between 2019 and 2024. For researchers, this indicates a recent worsening in the ability to correctly identify the intentionality of violent deaths. Violence Atlas 2026 In 2024, Brazil recorded 42,590 homicides, equivalent to a rate of 20.1 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The Violence Atlas analyzed the 5,570 Brazilian municipalities with information considered valid. Of this total, 1,578 had no estimated homicides in 2024. Half of the homicides recorded in the country occurred in just 99 municipalities, which represent 1.8% of Brazilian cities. The 10 municipalities with the highest number of homicides accounted for 19.4% of the deaths recorded in Brazil. Watch more news about Alto Tietê
