The alliance was discussed in Brasília, in a meeting with the national president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto. On social media, Abilio reacted to the articulation and said that he will not be “incoherent” when standing on the same platform as political opponents.
"If my party in Mato Grosso joins with the PT, out of party loyalty do I have to support the PT? Don't expect that from me. Either release me, or tolerate, or expel me. I won't go with PT and MDB", he stated.
According to the mayor, resistance to the MDB is linked to recent political disputes. Abilio said that he does not consider it coherent to integrate the same leadership project that he faced at the polls and with which he maintains public disagreements.
Among the names he mentioned is state deputy Eduardo Botelho (MDB), opponent in the election for Cuiabá City Hall in 2024. The mayor also mentioned MDB politicians who contested municipal elections against candidates supported by the PL.
"We fought in the last election and we're still opponents. Now they want to put everyone on the same bus and pretend we're friends. We can't," he declared.
Abilio also mentioned vice-mayor Coronel Vânia, who left Novo and joined the MDB in February this year. The two have maintained political friction since the party change.
“My vice changed parties, criticizes Bolsonaro and criticizes me, she went to the MDB”, he stated.
Dissatisfaction with the composition is not restricted to the mayor of Cuiabá. Federal deputy José Medeiros (PL), announced as a pre-candidate for the Senate on the Wellington ticket, also resists approaching the MDB.
Behind the scenes, Medeiros considers not participating in the same platform as Wellington if the alliance is confirmed. The parliamentarian is also considering declaring support for the re-election of governor Otaviano Pivetta (Republicans), in a sign of contradiction with the articulation between PL and MDB.
