Foz do Amazonas and the future of oil exploration in Brazil - The Subject #1786

Last Saturday (15), Petrobras announced the identification of hydrocarbons in the Morpho well, located 175 kilometers off the coast of Amapá and around 2,800 meters deep. The confirmation that there is oil in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, on the so-called Equatorial Margin, generated immediate excitement – ??President Lula even called the discovery the country's "passport to the future". But there is still a long way to go before the economic viability of oil exploration in the region is confirmed. The president of the state-owned company, Magda Chambriard, speaks of up to 7 years for the first barrel of oil to be extracted from underwater waters. There are optimistic economic prospects, but there are also environmental and climate risks: the region is considered extremely environmentally sensitive and investment in fossil fuels goes against the country's commitment to the energy transition. He explains how the possible exploration will take place, analyzes the risks to the environmental issue and compares the Brazilian case with that of Guyana.
